A Montana farming family faces off against others who are encroaching on their land. Lloyd is played by Forrie J. Smith, a seasoned rodeo veteran. John Dutton (Kevin Costner) often seems to “forget” his Montanan accent and drifts back to the SoCal accent he usually uses. Featured on WatchMojo: 10 Best Under-the-Radar Summer TV Shows (2018). (Review covers first two seasons only) I didn’t expect to like this series, but the story, acting, and cinematography are excellent. It’s basically Montana Mafia Wars with massive testosterone (cowboys with guns on horseback while fishing)! Master actor Costner stars as The Duttons. The show is at its best when it shows the Duttons moving the chessboard and their enemies participating. The show goes sour early in the second season, but picks up again midway through the second season. Kelsey Asbille is the weakest link in the role of Monica, and she plays poorly, the story falls awkwardly and the acting just passes by. I think Cole Hauser may be the strongest actor (along with Costner himself) as Rip, and I look forward to more. scenes Rip was in it too. Thomas Rainwater is also great. The story is pulsating and the scenery is beautiful. Just as Cormac McCarthy’s "All The Pretty Horses" was a bit more raw and brutal than the title suggests, this show hits me the same way. I highly recommend it and wish I hadn’t waited so long to watch it.
